Application of Anammox-Based Processes in Urban WWTPs: Are We on the Right Track?

The application of partial nitritation and anammox processes (PN/A) to remove nitrogen can improve the energy efficiency wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) as well diminish their operational costs. However, there are still several limitations that preventing widespread PN/A in urban WWTPs such as: (a) loss performance stability units operated at sludge line, when is thermally pretreated increase biogas production; (b) proliferation nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) mainstream; (c) maintenance a suitable effluent quality mainstream. In this work, different strategies overcome these were modelled analyzed. whose thermically hydrolyzed, implementation an anerobic before unit best alternative, from economic point view, maintain stable unit. order apply process mainstream, growth ammonia-oxidizing (AOB) should be promoted line by supplying extra anaerobic digesters. AOB generated would applied water partially oxidize ammonia, then carried out. Excess nitrate and/or NOB removed recycling fraction WWTP biological reactor promote its denitrification.
